How to Choose a Retreat in India: 10 Questions Before You Book

A beautiful photograph can make you want to go somewhere. It cannot tell you who will host you, what your room will be like or what happens if your plans change. Before choosing a retreat in India, ask for enough practical detail to picture the actual days you are buying.

We would want you to ask these questions of YouFinder too. A clear answer is more useful than a persuasive adjective.

1. What is this retreat for?

Read the programme and the description together. Is the emphasis on a particular practice, creative activity, social time or exploring a place? Ask what it is not designed to provide. A reflective group experience should not be mistaken for clinical treatment.

2. Who will lead the sessions?

Ask for names, relevant backgrounds and what each person will lead. If the line-up is still being finalised, find out when it will be confirmed. An organisation’s history and an individual facilitator’s qualifications are different pieces of information.

3. How many people will be there?

Group size changes the experience. A small retreat can offer continuity with the same people; a larger event offers a different social rhythm. The announced January YouFinder retreat has a maximum of 12 participants. That number does not describe every YouFinder gathering.

4. What does an ordinary day look like?

Look for an example schedule with meals, sessions and free time. Ask which parts are proposed and which are fixed. Weather-dependent outings need room to change, but you should still understand the general shape of the experience.

5. Can I choose not to participate?

Ask about passing on a question, observing an activity and taking time alone. Also ask whether a private alternative costs extra. Optional participation and a refundable package are not the same thing.

6. What room am I paying for?

Confirm occupancy, bed arrangement, bathroom, view and whether the price is per person or per room. If you are travelling alone, ask how sharing will be arranged. Photographs may show a category rather than your exact room.

7. What is the full amount payable?

Starting prices help you shortlist. A written total helps you decide. Ask about taxes, meals, transfers, activities and any compulsory charges. Keep a separate line in your budget for your journey to the retreat.

8. Can the place meet my needs?

Discuss dietary requirements, allergies, mobility, stairs and any other practical needs before payment. A property having a pool or Wi-Fi does not answer questions about access or guaranteed connectivity.

9. What happens if plans change?

Read the cancellation and transfer terms. Ask about deadlines, availability and any price difference for moving dates. “Transferable” should not be understood as a cash refund.

10. How is my booking confirmed?

Know who you are paying, what written confirmation you will receive and whom to contact before arrival. Keep the agreed room, dates, inclusions and terms together in one place.

If you cannot get an answer to a question that matters to you, wait before paying. The right retreat should make sense in the practical details as well as in the pictures.
